A Glenside woman is facing felony charges after leaving the Willow Grove Park Mall without paying, say police
Holiday shopping is at a peak of hustle and bustle, but one Glenside woman opted not to pay for her merchandise totaling nearly $1,000, according to police.
Emily Mercer Conmy, 47, of the 200 block of Buttonwood Way, in Glenside, was detained by the Macy’s Loss Prevention Officer (LPO) at the Willow Grove Park Mall, when Abington Township Police were called to the scene, police said, on Dec. 11 around 10:23 p.m. According to a criminal complaint, Conmy was observed selecting merchandise inside the store before walking into a changing room on the first floor of the retail store.
Police said that a store employee checked the changing room prior to Conmy entering and observed that no merchandise and no tags were inside the room. After a short time inside, Conmy exited the changing room without merchandise, and was observed only carrying two reusable shopping bags, said the criminal complaint. When an employee checked the fitting room after use, the employee said that the merchandise she’d brought in was not in the room and that numerous merchandise tags Conmy had removed from merchandise were inside the room, police said.
The Macy’s LPO then observed Conmy pass all points of sale without making any attempt to pay for the merchandise in her possession, said the complaint. Instead, Conmy left out of the second-floor exit near Old Welsh Road, police said.
The LPO stopped Conmy as she attempted to walk into the parking lot to her vehicle, police added. Conmy admitted to the LPO that she had numerous pieces of clothing in her reusable shopping bags from the store, which she did not pay for and was trying to steal, said police.
After investigating the matter, the LPO found Conmy to be in possession of ten pieces of clothing from the Macy’s retail store, all of which had had their tags removed by Conmy, said police. The clothing value was totaled at $983.49, said the complaint.
Conmy has two prior convictions for retail theft. As such, she is facing charges including felony counts of retail theft by the taking of merchandise, receiving stolen property, and retail theft by altering a label or price marking.
Conmy had a preliminary arraignment on Dec. 12 at 9:30 a.m. and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 22 at 12:15 p.m. before Magisterial District Judge Juanita A. Price.
