A woman who was forced to undergo an emergency hysterectomy following a C-section, and her husband, will have their $8 million medical malpractice suit against Abington Memorial Hospital upheld by the state’s highest courts, 10 years after the incident caused pain and suffering to the family.
According to The Legal Intelligencer, the Pennsylvania Superior Court has upheld the verdict against Abington Memorial Hospital. A three-judge panel on Dec. 6, said the article, unanimously rejected Abington’s challenge to the verdict. Per the report, Judge Timika Lane said, in her opinion, that “none of the hospital’s issues merit relief.”
Laura Rongione, and her husband, filed the suit alleging that hospital staff failed to detect a uterine artery cut, resulting in complications that led to an undetected bleed, causing her to go into “hypovolemic shock, then went into cardiac arrest and ultimately had to undergo an emergency hysterectomy,” said Aleeza Furman’s report.
A Montgomery County jury awarded $5.5 million to Rongione for pain and suffering, and $2.5 million to her husband for “loss of consortium” with a June 2023 verdict, according to Furman. The suit was originally filed in 2014.
