Phillies Won’t Be Getting Garrett Crochet, Who's Headed to the Red Sox

Despite reported interest both last summer and this offseason, the Phillies will not be acquiring LHP Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox.

The Red Sox acquired the talented lefty from the White Sox in a trade Wednesday afternoon.

This is the return, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

According to MLB Pipeline, Teel is the No. 4 prospect for the Red Sox, Montgomery is No. 5, Meidroth is No. 11 and Gonzalez is No. 14. Teel is ranked as the No. 25 prospect in baseball, while Montgomery is No. 54. So this would have been like the Phillies giving up Aidan Miller, Justin Crawford and more to acquire Crochet.

ESPN's Buster Olney and Jesse Rogers previously reported that the Phillies were a serious suitor for Crochet last summer, but ultimately balked at including No. 1 prospect Andrew Painter in a deal.

More recently, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic said that the Phillies weren't willing to part with as much now as they were in the summer since Crochet is half a year closer to free agency now. Crochet can become a free agent after the 2026 season.

Crochet would have been something of a luxury addition for the Phillies, who already have one of the game's best starting rotations with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez and Ranger Suárez. However, acquiring Crochet may have freed the Phillies up to trade Suárez, who is entering his contract year, for another position of need on the roster.
