They call him a “Top Gun,” but strangely it has nothing to do with guns, and even less to do with Tom Cruise movies (but he “could be my wingman anytime”). Instead, one local police officer was recently honored for his work keeping the streets safe by way of DUI enforcement efforts.

This past November, Upper Moreland Police Department’s Sergeant James Robb was one of just 38 law enforcement officers from Pennsylvania to receive what is called “the 2024 DUI Top Gun Award.” The award is given annually by the Pennsylvania DUI Association and honors the top impaired driving enforcement officers from across the Commonwealth.

"We expect a great deal from our law enforcement officers,” said the Team DUI website, which listed those honored here. “We ask them to be a counselor, teacher, medical technician, social worker, psychologist, mentor and negotiator, and then we expect them to enforce the laws. Law enforcement officers in Pennsylvania deserve a thank you for the work in reducing the threat of impaired drivers on our roadways. It is with this intent that the PA DUI Association has developed and offers this award to police officers that have a demonstrated commitment to DUI/DRE enforcement."

In addition to his work as a night work Patrol Sergeant, Sergeant Robb has “remained vigilant in his commitment to taking impaired drivers off the streets of Upper Moreland,” said the release honoring the state’s top officers.

According to the post, this year alone, Robb successfully completed the extremely rigorous Drug Recognition Expert training, making him one of only several hundred officers in the state with those elite credentials. He is an instructor in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and Advanced Roadside Impairment Driving Enforcement. As part of the DUI Association, Sergeant Robb participates in sobriety checkpoints in the Upper Moreland Township area and performs roving details targeting impaired driving.

Robb is a Field Training Officer for UMTPD and is a member of the Major Incident Response Team for Montgomery County

“To say that we are proud to have Sergeant Robb among our ranks is an understatement,” said UMTPD Chief J. Scott Bendig via the department’s CrimeWatch site. “Please join us in congratulating Sergeant Jim Robb on this well-deserved recognition!”
