In addition to showcasing the work of both artists, a local art center will also present a chance to meet the craftspeople and talk to them about their art.
The Abington Art Center will host an Artists’ Talk with “High in Fiber” artists Bren Ahearn and Flora Wilds on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Bren Ahearn is a Philadelphia-based fiber artist who “uses textile crafts to explore masculinity’s conflicting messages and to document personal experiences,” said the Center’s event post.
“His most recent series, ‘School Shootings in the USA,’ on display in our Kellner gallery, combines his experience as an educator being trained for active shooter situations, and the ongoing issue of gun violence in America,” said the Center’s post. “Each pennant within his installation represents a school at which there has been an active shooting and is created in the school colors of each affected school.”
Ahearn will not be solo in the Talk next week.
Flora Wilds is a New York-based fiber artist who creates work from found materials and objects that are “traditionally tied to femininity.”
“Wilds’ Bikini Quilt Column, on view in our Book Room gallery, is part of an ongoing series that reflects on the gendered histories and cultural associations of objects,” said the Center’s post. “Her artistic practice lends itself well to the reflection on American culture, the learned societal gender roles, and the material synchronicities that stretch through time.”
Both of the artists will be present at the evening’s event, and the public is welcome to have a “fruitful discussion” for all. The Center reported that the two will “dive deep into their artistic practices and bodies of work” during the Talk.
The Dec. 11 Artists’ Talk will be held in the Abington Art Center’s Kellner gallery. Hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and light fare will be provided during the talk. There is no cost to attend.
